We had worked with Venkat at VitalSigns and Aaref at CenterRun, but they did not previously know one another. So we introduced two very special entrepreneurs with tremendous intellect and ambition, and the outcome was Clearwell. The initial ambition of the company was around email intelligence, but after lots of collaboration Aaref and Venkat moved towards eDiscovery and the business took off . The management team did a wonderful job scaling up the company, and achieving levels of profitability which we rarely see in fast growing software companies. So it felt bitter-sweet when the company was acquired by Symantec. The one silver-lining is that we hope to work with many of the Clearwell team again, starting with Aaref who we persuaded to join us at Sequoia.
