When We First Met
In late 2010, we were evaluating whether to open a Sequoia office in Brazil. To help us decide, we recruited David Vélez, who was smart, passionate about Latin America, extremely driven, and based just down the road at Stanford GSB. David joined us full time while still a first-year MBA, excelling in both roles—our first indication that we were on to something special. And while we ended up passing on opening the office, we had stumbled upon something else—an opportunity to partner with a future founder in Brazil.

David had identified a significant gap in the financial services market, and set out to fill it. The idea was only in its infancy—a credit card company in Brazil—but we were sure about David. He had a vision and the wherewithal to execute relentlessly, and we immediately backed him in the seed round. By the time the Series A came around, it was no longer just a bet on a resolute founder, it was a clear opportunity to partner with a powerful yet unconventional team on a promising business—and we’ve doubled down in every round since.
