Job Description / Skills Required

The role of Software Engineer within Metaswitch is about challenging and growing your abilities to build reliable production grade software that supports a large mobile telecommunications community, delivering new services that enhance the user experience and evolve the type of services being delivered through mobile network operators worldwide.

As a software developer, you will be working in an agile environment (Scrum) working with a fully automated build/test infrastructure environment, building and testing new services and features that run inside or work with the mobile telecommunications application server (TAS), a signalling and services node within the 3G, 4G and 5G mobile network architecture.

Working with all levels of the company to understand requirements and being responsible, as part of a team, for delivering frequent functional releases of a product. This role requires the desire to research and design new technologies to create new opportunities and also to push the envelope in robustness, scalability, performance, speed of delivery and usability.


Main Responsibilities

Your responsibilities are to work within a team of developers and testers to deliver high quality and well scoped functioning products; Providing design input and communicating at all levels to ensure all requirements are being addressed and the whole team are working to the same objective.

Working with your immediate team you will identify and breakdown work into design, research, development and test tasks, creating discrete functional deliverable stories/use cases, estimate as a team, scope and set focus for each scrum sprint. Participating in regular sprint refinement and retrospective session in order to continually improve the process and delivery.

Working with the infrastructure tools available to ensure that project work items are regularly updated and accurate to ensure transparency to your team and the wider organization, in order to track project progress and understand priorities. 

Work with the support group to ensure the operability of the product is discussed, understood and is part of the scope of any product deliverable. Working with L3 Support to provide technical analysis and assistance to support products in the field; and when required provide technical analysis, guidance and advice directly to customers.

Building and developing good relationships with the wider engineering teams/individuals to ensure you keep up to date with changing practices, new initiatives or products that can be used within your own engineering efforts and providing the same back to the engineering group.


You have

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to pay careful attention to detail

  • The capacity to work well in groups and a willingness to understand the various roles played by fellow team members

  • Knowledge about the telecommunications domain and experience working with protocols and standards defined interoperations

  • A good knowledge of coding in Java, as well as the desire and capability to become a domain expert in mobile telecommunications and applications development within this field

  • A Bachelor’s degree in software, math or science, as well as broad experience with computer systems and applications
